Onboard

Nestcoin · Visa

3.0/5 1.0/5 · Data verified on

Onboard is a Nestcoin money app combining currency accounts, a virtual Visa card (the Flex Card), a "seedless" self-custody wallet and a crypto exchange in one mobile app, built for emerging markets (Africa, South-East Asia, LATAM). EUR, GBP and USD accounts are opened from the app — the former OnboardPay has been retired and replaced by this feature. The card spends a prepaid USD balance and is topped up in three ways: local-currency bank transfer (NGN, IDR or KES only), USDT/USDC stablecoins with a choice of network, or moving funds from another Onboard balance. For a European user that is the decisive point: euros can sit in the Onboard account, but the card cannot be funded by EUR bank transfer directly — it goes through the internal balance. Funding costs 1.25% on the Flex Card (1.5% on the Classic), min $1 and max $5,000 per transaction. The first card is free, subsequent ones $2. Classic cards have been deprecated: only the Flex remains. The card balance is custodial and held by the issuer, even though Onboard markets its wallet as self-custody.

Strengths

  • EUR, GBP and USD accounts can be opened from the app (the former OnboardPay was replaced by this feature)
  • First card free; USDT/USDC funding with a choice of network, credited within minutes
  • Works with Apple Pay and Google Wallet; card withdrawals are free
  • Self-custody "seedless" wallet and exchange built into the same app
  • No notable sovereignty advantage documented.

Weaknesses

  • The card balance is prepaid in USD and held by the issuer: despite the self-custody wallet, the card itself is not non-custodial
  • Virtual card only, no physical version and no ATM withdrawals
  • Funding is not free: 1.25% on the Flex Card, capped at $5,000 per transaction
  • 1.5% + $0.30 fee on non-USD and cross-border transactions, and no cashback
  • Direct bank funding of the card accepts local currencies only (NGN, IDR, KES): a European user must go through the internal balance or stablecoins
  • Classic cards have been deprecated: only the Flex Card remains
  • Custodial: the platform holds your funds and can freeze or lose them.
  • Full KYC required: verified identity, zero pseudonymity.
  • Subject to regulation (Onboard operates through Nestcoin group entities registered as Money Services Businesses: Gopay Financial Services Inc. with FINTRAC (Canada) and Onboard Digital with FinCEN (USA), plus Nestcoin Europe Sp. z o.o. registered as a VASP in Poland (EU).): reporting to authorities and freezes on order.

Verdict

C D ★ 3.0/5 ★ 1.0/5 Estimated net annual cost: €0/year

Virtual Visa prepaid card with an issuer-managed USD balance: protection rests on MSB registrations (FINTRAC Canada, FinCEN USA) and VASP (Poland), not on a deposit guarantee scheme. Suited to cross-border earners, but the card balance remains custodial.

Low sovereignty over the card balance: despite the "seedless" self-custody wallet, the card spends an issuer-held prepaid USD balance with full KYC. Deposited stablecoins are converted and custodied by Onboard.

FAQ

Is the Onboard card custodial or self-custody?

Onboard offers a "seedless" self-custody wallet, but the Visa card spends a prepaid USD balance: deposited stablecoins are converted to dollars and held by the issuer on the card balance. The card itself is therefore effectively custodial.

How much does the Onboard card cost and what fees apply?

Issuance is a one-time 3 USD fee, there is no annual fee and no cashback. Non-USD transactions carry a 2% + 0.50 USD FX markup; the card is virtual-only with a 5,000 USD daily limit.
