Petra
Aptos Labs
Petra is the official wallet of the Aptos blockchain, developed by Aptos Labs (the US company founded by former engineers of Meta's Diem/Libra project). It is pure self-custody and available as a browser extension, a mobile app and a web wallet, with sync across devices. Its distinctive trait is the recovery model: you can access and recover the account via email or social login (Google, Apple) without having to manage a seed phrase, while the BIP-39 mnemonic remains an optional route for those who want classic key control; the Ledger hardware wallet is also supported. Inside you manage assets and peer-to-peer payments, run token swaps, do native APT staking and interact with the DeFi protocols of the Aptos ecosystem. Being tied to a single chain, it is not a multi-chain wallet: those who don't use Aptos don't need it. The code is not declared open-source.

Strengths
- Official and most integrated wallet of the Aptos ecosystem; self-custody with email/social recovery without a seed (convenient for non-technical users) and optional mnemonic for those who want it; native APT swap and staking; Ledger support.
- Self-custody: funds stay in your wallet — the platform cannot touch them.
- No KYC: usable without identity verification.
Weaknesses
- Aptos-only: useless for those who don't use that chain; social login (Google/Apple) introduces a third-party touchpoint and lowers privacy compared to a purely seed-based wallet; code not declared open-source, so not publicly verifiable.
- Closed source: no way to verify what it does with wallet and data.
Verdict
Score 3.9/5, solid profile. In its favour: official and most integrated wallet of the Aptos ecosystem; self-custody with email/social recovery without a seed (convenient for non-technical users) and optional mnemonic for those who want it; native APT swap and staking; Ledger support. The trade-off to weigh: aptos-only: useless for those who don't use that chain; social login (Google/Apple) introduces a third-party touchpoint and lowers privacy compared to a purely seed-based wallet; code not declared open-source, so not publicly verifiable.
On the Sovereignty lens the score is 3.5/5 (solid): the strength is fund control (5.0/5), while trustless / auditability (0.0/5) is the weak link.

FAQ
Is Petra custodial?
No. Petra is a self-custody wallet: private keys stay on your device and Aptos Labs has no access to your funds. Even when you use email or social login to sign in, the model stays non-custodial; the BIP-39 mnemonic is available as an optional backup.
Which blockchains does Petra support?
Petra is a single-chain wallet dedicated to the Aptos blockchain. It is not multi-chain and does not handle Bitcoin, Ethereum or other networks. It is designed for those operating in the Aptos ecosystem (assets, APT staking, Aptos DeFi and dApps).
Can I recover Petra without a seed phrase?
Yes. Petra lets you access and recover the account via email or social login (Google, Apple) without manually managing a seed phrase. Alternatively you can use the optional BIP-39 mnemonic for classic key control. The Ledger hardware wallet is also supported (source: official site, August 2026).
